The historic center of Sintra is an open air museum, filled with magnificent treasures such as the luxurious gardens, the Capuchin Convent of the eighteenth century, Monserrate Park and many museums.

The National Palace is in the historical center, impressive monument, known to be the only royal palace in the country, of medieval origin, which remains intact. The splendid combination of styles - Moorish, Gothic and Manueline - as well as its richly decorated rooms, the oriental type of tiles, delicate paintings, antique furniture and beautiful tapestries well worth a visit to this palace. However, the most notable features of this monument are the two tall conical chimneys - a real reference point in the misty air of Sintra.

Meandering through one of the mountain peaks, stands the Moorish Castle, dating back to the VIII-XIX centuries and is a testament to the past of Portugal. Conquered by King Afonso Henriques in 1147 and restored by order of King Ferdinand II in 1839, this colossal military structure was preserved over time. Note the austere towers, the original tank and the extraordinary battlements of the castle, where you can admire beautiful views of the city.

The eccentric Pena Palace, one of the major symbol of the Sintra landscape, is considered one of the most original architectural masterpieces of Portugal. Resembles a fairytale palace and displays a fusion of styles Gothic, Manueline, Moorish and Indian. Dates back to the nineteenth century and is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage, containing a number of exotic turrets, bastions and pastel domes, windows Carefully crafted frames and pinnacles of shining colors. Built by King Ferdinand II and Queen Mary in order to create an idyllic retreat for royalty, this romantic palace contains Victorian-style rooms, trompe-d'oeils, real furniture and beautifully maintained gardens.
